pH is something we hear quite commonly in the beauty industry but what does it actually mean and why is it so important?
Everything has a pH, for example hair has a pH of 4.5-5.5. This is the acidity/alkalinity measurement and any products used on hair have a pH designed to achieve various outcomes based around a finishing target of 4.5-5.5.
Hair products that open the cuticle (outer layer of the hair structure) to achieve permanent straightening, lightening or perming will generally have a higher pH than the hair and be more alkaline and hair products that close and seal the cuticle are more conditioning will have a lower pH and be more acidic.
However, it’s important to note if you take hair too far out of it’s normal range (anything with a pH too high or low) can cause hair to break/snap.
All ME&MY products have a pH designed to best benefit the hair and is why we have a recommendation for the best hair types for each product.
