Why your hair oil might be doing more harm than good!

Using a hair oil could be causing the damage you’re trying to avoid!

TLDR (Too long didn’t read aka the short version):

Hair oils only work if you add nourishment and moisture to the hair prior to use. Ensure you have a good hair routine that includes hair moisturisers and treatments.

The full story:

The popularity of hair oils has increased dramatically in the last 10 years but I’m going to be completely honest with you I HATE them (and I’m not talking about scalp oils here – they’re two different uses and results). The issue I have with them is the advertising around them is misleading. You should not expect improved hair condition without using a product that will add the essential things your hair has lost (moisture and nourishment).

Here’s why:

Most oils have a molecular size that is too large to penetrate into the hair and even if they do, they hold very little benefit for the hair.

Not to mention that oils used before heat styling is just asking for increased damage because most of them allow for increased heat across a greater area that takes longer to cool down. Just think it’s a bit like if you burn your skin on a dry oven sheet vs burn your skin with hot oil. The hot oil sits on the skin and continues the burning process for longer and you end up with a worse burn in the long-run. Except with our skin we immediately do what we can to cool it down because we can FEEL it. With our hair we don’t feel it so we remain unaware of the damage we’re causing.

Most oils will sit on the surface of the hair and can seal the hair to stop drying/loss of nourishment over the day. However, this will only be effective if you’re putting the moisture and nourishment into the hair in the first place. This is done with hair moisturisers (like Angel Magic Moisture) and/ or treatments (like Coco Fusion Masque Treatment or Power Shot Energy Treatment).

“Of course the beauty of an oil is that it will increase shine and smoothness – just don’t be fooled into thinking that it’s repairing your hair or doing anything beyond having a temporary cosmetic effect that will be washed off at the next shampoo.”

My recommendations:

As I’ve said above hair oils aren’t necessarily bad as long as they’re being used for the right purpose – a finishing product to seal the hair resulting in keeping the good stuff in and the bad stuff out! Which can also be accomplished with our serum x oil – KISSSS Controlling Gloss.
